New Music From GATES TO THE MORNING: Return To Earth LP Review

GATES TO THE MORNING is a black metal band from Bloomingdale, New Jersey who formed in 2007. “Return to Earth” was released in July 2019 and recorded at Backroom Studios and mastered at Sterling Sound.

The album opens with a piano solo with a hint of guitar, hinting that this is a instrumental piece and sure enough the entire album is mostly that. After the first song comes an intro to a rock piece with vocals and a backing drum and dual guitar track. “Terra Incognita” continues with a driving double bass drum and hard hitting guitar riffs, the song speaks about new beginnings.

“Surveying Forgotten Landscapes” has a guitar solo that is transient. Thoughts of standing on a mountain top as if I had been here before. The sky is dark and clear with the air crisp and clean. I could listen to this track on a loop while meditating. This song continues into “My Star” which continues the same feel but with a double bass drum.

Okay, meditation phase is over, now into a bit of death metal as the vocals scream by Sean Meyers and dual guitars again. Guitar solos and a a driving riff continue with “Crossing the Abyss” as talks about schizophrenia haunts the air. “Freezing the Sundials” and the rest of the tracks are pretty much the same as all of the others. Gentle whims that send me off into a dream, this album is great for winding down to.

Overall I give this album a 6.5 out of 10. Sure the first few songs are great but then the rest of the album is just repetitive if you are into that kinda thing. I am reviewing from a thrash metal point of view so your rating may differ.
